From Support Worker to Business Administrator | 6 Months On

male and female professional high fiving

A couple of months ago, we spoke to Chloe, Business Administrator at Helena’s House. Chloe had recently moved from the role of Support Worker to Business Administrator, and she told us about her first week in the role. Having now been Business Administrator for 6 months, we caught up with Chloe to find out how she is finding her new role!

How are you finding the role? Is it what you expected?

I am enjoying my role as Business Administrator; the role covers a wider range of tasks than I originally thought but it means that I always have tasks I need to complete which I enjoy as it keeps me busy. Having never worked in an admin role before, my worry going into the role was that it might become a bit repetitive. However, for me it has been the opposite and although I have set tasks to complete every week, each day feels different.

Back in March, you mentioned that you were looking forward to learning new skills and expanding your knowledge in a new area – what have you learnt in the role so far?

Working as a Business Administrator I am still learning new skills every week. Over the past six months I have learnt so much, for example, how to complete payroll, manage the house finances, and how to use the software packages in a more efficient way. I feel like I have gained a lot of knowledge about the company and its policies and procedures since becoming a Business Administrator.

Tell us a standout memory from your time at Northern Healthcare while working as Business Administrator.

I don’t have one stand out memory, but whilst being the Business Administrator at Helena’s House, the service has been through many changes and some difficult times. Seeing how the team have supported and helped each other has been great, and seeing the improvements the team have made and the positive effect they have had on the residents has been amazing.

Have you found the challenges to be as you thought? Are there any new challenges in the role as Business Administrator?

Having not worked in an admin job before there was a lot I had to learn, and I was expecting to face a lot of challenges. Most weeks, I have a task to complete that I have never done before so I am constantly learning and being challenged. However, when I am unsure about anything I have always been able to get support from the senior Business Administrators and other Business Admins at different services. The role of a Business Administrator is always expanding, and I am becoming more involved with different parts of the company.

What is your favourite thing about the role?

One of the things I enjoy about being a Business Administrator and still working at Helena’s House is that although I am no longer the residents Support Worker, I still get to see the progress they are making every day.

How have you found moving from a more practical role to a role behind the scenes?

I found it harder than I expected; I knew it would be difficult as I would have to take a step back from the residents. When I first transitioned to my new role, residents would still ask for my support throughout the day with medication or their daily activities and I found it hard at first to have to redirect them to the Support Workers on shift. Even now being 6 months into the role, it’s something that I still find difficult.

Is there anything you miss about being a Support Worker?

What I miss most about being a Support Worker is spending time with the residents and supporting them with their daily activities and in the community. As a Business Administrator I still spend time with the residents and provide support when I have time, but not as much as I was used to.
