We caught up with Clare Sudders, Support Worker at Holland House and Northern Healthcare Values Champion Individual 2022 Award winner!

When did you join Northern Healthcare?

I joined the team over a year ago.

What are the main responsibilities within your role?
  • Supporting each individual with their medications.
  • Supporting residents with going out into the community to appointments, completing daily tasks such as shopping, or supporting them out on activity days.
  • Supporting residents with daily tasks in-house such as laundry, room cleaning, cooking, any meetings they have with their care teams, or paperwork and booking appointments with the relevant professionals.
  • Being there to offer advice and listen to any concerns or any difficulties our residents may have.
What attracted you to apply to join the Northern Healthcare team?

The idea of working to support other individuals really appealed to me.

Can you describe a typical day in your role?

No day is the same, in the mornings I support residents with medications and during breakfast if required, and also offer support if they’ve had any concerns from the previous night. Myself and the team plan the activities for the day, confirm appointments, and complete a presence check, daily audit and safety huddle. Following this, I will then support residents to appointments or help to facilitate the activities for the morning, before updating the daily notes.

In the afternoon, I will support residents out into the community for shopping or activities, or appointments if required. I will then offer support with any in-house tasks, and facilitate the activities planned for the afternoon. In the afternoons I may also have 1:1 link work sessions with our residents. I will update the daily notes each afternoon.

In the evenings, I support residents with medications, continue with in-house activities, and offer support with meals. I also provide 1:1 support to residents. At the end of the day I will complete a daily summary.

What are the challenges?

Dealing with the difficulties that may arise if a resident doesn’t want your support when they’re in need and getting them the correct level of support required.

What do you like most about your role?

Seeing each individual grow in their own ways and being there when they need support. It is really nice when a resident takes your advice on board to turn a negative into a positive to achieve a better outcome.

Please let us know about a standout memory from your time at Northern Healthcare

Watching a resident grow from strength to strength and seeing how happy and positively their outlook on life has changed.

If you could describe your role in 3 words, what would they be?
  • Rewarding
  • Productive
  • Empowering
How did it feel to be nominated and win the Northern Healthcare Values Champion award?

I was shocked, and very appreciative to receive the award and the recognition for my work by the residents and team members who voted. I personally think we all do a tremendous job at what we do.

What would you say to someone thinking of joining Northern Healthcare?

If you want to make a difference to someone’s life and want to grow in your career, Northern Healthcare can offer you the opportunity .
