We dropped by Amy Johnson House to congratulate our Team Player of the Year Award Winner for 2021, Support Worker Rachel Harris. Here’s what she had to say about her experience working at Northern Healthcare…

Q & A with Rachel Harris, Team Player of the Year 2021

What do you enjoy most about your role?

“I think we have these really lovely moments in the communal area, where there will be residents and staff sat down, we’ll be watching something on the TV and we’ll all just be giggling and laughing and it’s a really nice family environment…and they’re just really, really nice moments. So just having a laugh and a joke with them it’s brilliant.”

How do you support each other?

“We all kind of work together really well, so say if something does happen, all staff are very in-tune with each other so we kind of know who is going to do what, who is going to ring where and how we are going to tackle a problem, so I’ve always felt supported.”

What makes Northern Healthcare stand out?

“I do really like the fact it is person-centred care and we work very closely with the residents to make sure that they get the best care that they need. They have input in their lives and they inform us on how they would like to be cared for and I think that’s really important and I think they get a lot out of it.”

Please let us know about a standout memory from your time at Northern Healthcare.

“A stand out memory, this is a really weird one – I gave a resident a compliment and they smiled, and I hadn’t seen them smile, and it was a really genuine one. It was a really warm one, and that was something that was probably one of my favourite memories.”

What would you say to someone thinking of joining Northern Healthcare?

“Do it, go for it, it’s lovely and rewarding, it’s humbling and it teaches you a lot and you’ll meet some really wonderful people along the way, staff and residents. The residents are brilliant and it’s lovely working with them. It’s a luxury to be able to work with such lovely people and assist them, because they deal with a lot, and they go through a lot, and nobody can really understand what’s going on but the fact that you can help them a little bit is really important.”
