Our supported living services are full of activities with a busy calendar of group cooking classes, exercise, health and nutrition workshops, 1-2-1 time and occupational therapy to suit everyone’s needs and help our residents to reach their recovery goals.

Alongside their friends at Tenby House, residents took a trip down to Blackpool together to watch the Red Arrows and enjoy some seaside fun!

A massive well done to residents from both Glen Garth and Tenby House for their contributions to March for Men 2023. A wonderful support worker even made medals for all who took part! What a fantastic feat.

Residents from both Glen Garth and Tenby House both located in Barrow joined forces for a fun day at the beach.

Glen Garth Gardening Group

Over the summer our residents have really taken to gardening! The Glen Garth Gardening Group have made incredible changes to the garden including, planting flowers perfect for pollinating, recycling ice cream boats to create planters and

They even rescued a dying bee and give it some sugar water… Glen Garth Heroes!

Taking on the challenge!

At the start of the year, our Glen Garth House residents took on the challenge of walking 2,000 steps daily to raise funds for a new pool table – a great way to kick-start the year! The pool table is already in use, promoting socialisation and some healthy competition.

Burns Night

One of our residents from Glen Garth House has been supported by our team to make homemade Haggis sausage rolls in keeping with the theme of the Scottish celebration of Burns Night.

Burns Night is celebrated on the 25th of January each year, marking the anniversary of the poet Robert Burns’ birth, one of the most famous and celebrated Scots.

New Year, New Goals

One of our Glen Garth House residents set themselves a goal to attend the local gym in the new year to improve overall health and fitness. One of our team members supported our resident to attend and they thoroughly enjoyed their first session.

Christmas Lunch

Glen Garth House and Tenby House residents attended a lovely Christmas lunch at their local Hungry Horse.

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas…

Our residents at Glen Garth House are already getting into the Christmas spirit! This weekend, the team and residents decorated the service and put up the tree… it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!🎄

Residents also came together with our residents from Tenby House, and were supported by the team to visit the town centre for the Christmas light switch on. The evening was full of music, laughter, and festivities!

To mark the start of December, residents enjoyed a visit to Chatsworth Christmas Craft Fair.

Let’s Go England!

Residents at Glen Garth House enjoyed a buffet while cheering on England in their first World Cup 2022 match, decorating the service (and themselves!) in an abundance of England flags!

Firework Fun

Residents at Glen Garth House enjoyed watching the fireworks over the Bonfire night weekend!

Rock DJ!

One of our residents from Glen Garth House was supported to watch Robbie Williams in concert in Manchester! Robbie is his idol, and he had an amazing time singing and dancing along to all of his favourite songs.

World’s Biggest Coffee Morning

Our residents at Glen Garth House and Tenby House joined together to host their Macmillan Cancer Support World’s Biggest Coffee Morning.

The event had a personal connection for everyone at the service, as shift leader Sam is currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Sam wanted to attend the event as Macmillan has been supporting and continue to support Sam and her family throughout the treatment process.

The residents and team members had been busy throughout the week baking cakes in readiness for the coffee morning, and these were on sale, as well as games of bingo, guess how many sweets in the jar, and a raffle with lots of prizes!

Overall, the team, residents, and their family members raised a massive £265 – an incredible amount which will help continue the amazing work that Macmillan do.

Thank you to everyone involved in the coffee morning, and a special thank you to Sam for allowing us to share her story.

Glorious Garden

Two residents from Glen Garth House joined in poetry group this week alongside Occupational Therapist Beth. Our residents decided on a theme of ‘gardens’ and held the group outside in the garden 🌳

The group began with looking at different garden themed poem examples, reading them aloud to each other and discussing which parts they liked best. Our residents then wrote down rhyming words and words they associate with the Glen Garth House garden, and put these together into this lovely poem!

Awards Celebrations

Glen Garth House held a star-studded party to celebrate the Northern Healthcare 2022 Awards. Residents were treated to a VIP lounge with sparkly decorations and each resident was presented with their own award.

Golfing

One of our Glen Garth House residents asked if he could go and play golf again like he used to. The team supported him with this, and he was over the moon and has been in a really positive mood since. Our resident wants to make this a regular thing, so the team will support him with this 🏌️

Glorious Garden Party

Residents at Glen Garth House held a garden party for Business Administrator Kirstene as she got married over the weekend, enjoying karaoke and a BBQ in the garden! 🌞

Platinum Post box

One of our residents at Glen Garth House worked hard alongside one of our team members to redecorate their PROUD post box ready for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. How amazing is this?

Chocolate Heaven

Our Team Leader Sarah supported one of our residents to bake a delicious chocolate cake – it was the perfect accompaniment to the evening brew!

Christmas Meal

Residents from Glen Garth House and Tenby House had a great time out for their Christmas meal! There were delicious roast dinners, party hats and even a little bit of dancing! 🎅

Macmillan Coffee Morning

Glen Garth House held a coffee morning for Macmillan at the end of September. There were delicious cakes and residents and staff had a lovely morning, all in aid of a good cause!

Glen Garth Cross Bay Walk

Two team members and two residents from Glen Garth House raised an impressive £800 for the North West Air Ambulance Service after taking to the beaches for a fundraising walk. The team undertook the Cross Bay Walk, which saw them walking across the sands from Arnside to Kents Bank. The iconic walk follows a 10 mile path, guided by an expert. The participants in the walk were given a free North West Air Ambulance shirt to wear while taking part.

Tracy Roberts-Tweddle, Area Manager commented: “The staff and residents really enjoyed it. They will be doing another one. It is just really good for their mental health and they are really proud with how much they raised. They really wanted to do something to help somebody so they chose to raise money for the North West Air Ambulance Service.”

It’s Coming Home!

Residents enjoyed watching and supporting England in the UEFA Euro 2020 competition. Unfortunately England lost out at the final hurdle – but residents still enjoyed the occasion!

Glen Garth House embrace Mental Health Awareness Week 2021

Glen Garth House marked #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek by creating a ‘Tree of Hope’ and a mindfulness area for residents. Inspirational quotes included:

It’s Grand National Day at Glen Garth
Residents from Glen Garth enjoyed celebrating the Grand National this weekend. Service Manager Tracy: “Staff went above and beyond arranging hats, food and mocktails so that the residents had a fantastic day on Saturday. We enjoyed some impromptu dancing and of course the Grand National in the sunshine!

The residents and team from Glen Garth House recently took a trip to Blackpool! Residents enjoyed a stroll along the beach and of course no trip to Blackpool is complete without fish and chips.

The Glen Garth Team Receive the Covid-19 Vaccination

Our team members from Glen Garth House were offered their Covid-19 vaccinations this weekend. A huge thank you to our health care colleagues in the NHS and all the people behind the scenes working tirelessly on the vaccine roll-out and helping us combat the coronavirus.

Christmas at Glen Garth 2020

Our residents and team members enjoyed a festive buffet followed by some singing and dancing at the Glen Garth Christmas Party!

Joanne, Support Worker at Glen Garth House had the honour of switching on the Barrow Christmas lights after being nominated through a local radio station and winning the Support Worker/Care Worker Switch-on Star tribute! Tracy, Service Manager comments: “I cannot put into words how proud we are of Joanne, I know she was extremely nervous about doing this but she did Glen Garth House proud!”

The Barrow community again have gone above and beyond, and gifted all our residents at Glen Garth House and Tenby House Christmas presents. Our team also delighted our neighbour with an early Christmas present, to thank him for being such a supportive neighbour who ‘always has a smile on his face and a warm welcome’.

The Friendly Scarecrow

Due to the current restrictions, celebrating Halloween with the traditional ‘Trick or Treat’ isn’t possible. But once again communities are coming up with their own ways of marking the occasion whilst following the guidelines. In Barrow the community are marking the occasion by making scarecrows! Glen Garth House and Tenby House decided to make a not so scary scarecrow for our keyworkers and they even enlisted the help of the poetry group.

Music for Mindfulness

Glen Garth House held a ‘Music for Mindfulness’ session, our very talented RMN Richard played guitar beautifully with lots of great feedback from the residents. Everyone felt very relaxed after the session – one of our gentlemen even told us that he has never managed to concentrate for so long!

Special 70th Birthday Celebrations
The Glen Garth team went above and beyond to make our resident’s 70th birthday celebrations special! He commented: “It was a lovely surprise and has to be the best birthday I have ever celebrated.”

Animal Therapy at Glen Garth

The team and residents at Glen Garth House were delighted to welcome some special guests for an animal therapy session. These beautiful lambs certainly have a unique way of lifting our spirits.

Glen Garth House Win Children in Need Fundraisers of the Year 2019

“A massive congratulations to Glen Garth House, they raised  £3,340.73 – an amazing target for us all to (hopefully) beat in 2020. Once again, I would like to thank everyone who ran, walked, baked cakes, hosted events etc. to help us raise such a fantastic amount.”
