Q&A with Michaela Buckingham

business administrator of the year 2021 award

What attracted you to apply to join the team?

I joined Northern Healthcare in 2017 as a Housekeeper, following recommendations from family and friends who already worked for NHC, and I really enjoyed supporting the residents.

After 10 months, the Service Manager discovered that I have my NVQ 2 in Business Administration and asked if I wanted to progress with the company and become the Business Administrator. I was excited and thankful for the opportunity to progress, I have never looked back and enjoy working for Northern Healthcare.

What are the main responsibilities in your role?

My main responsibilities are supporting the Service Manager, staff and residents with all administration tasks. On a typical day, I am supporting and ensuring all documentation, policy and procedures are kept up to date. I enjoy supporting residents and ensuring that all these issues are updated and in place, learning new skills and processes!

What are the challenges as a Business Administrator?

The challenges are ensuring that staff understand and implement systems i.e. petty cash and training matrix percentages are consistently high.

Please let us know about a standout memory

A standout memory of Northern Healthcare for me is being promoted from Housekeeper to Business Administrator. I was proud that my Service Manager saw my potential and offered me the opportunity to progress, and I was really honoured and pleased to be nominated and receive a Northern Healthcare award!

What would you say to someone thinking of joining the team?

If someone was thinking of joining NHC, I would say don’t let the stigma that sometimes surrounds mental health put you off, it’s a rewarding job and we are one big happy family. We have our ups and downs, but we are all here to support each other.
