We caught up with our Head Office Star 2021 award winner, HR Manager Sharon, to find out all about her experience working at Northern Healthcare.

Q & A with Sharon Gee, HR Manager

What are your main responsibilities as HR Manager?

Working alongside our Regional Operational Managers, supporting the Service Managers with consistent and effective HR operational support.

What attracted you to apply to join the team?

I knew I wanted to continue working in HR in the healthcare industry but didn’t want to work for a big corporate company where sometimes the personal touch is lost. Northern Healthcare came along and fitted the bill perfectly.

Can you describe a typical day in your role?

There isn’t a typical day in HR! Each day can be so varied, but this is part of what I love about working in HR.

What are the challenges?

You never quite know what you’re going to get asked next! Being able to think on your feet, bringing reassurance and support to Managers and staff is a must.

What do you like most about your role?

My role as HR Manager involves a mix of being on site and working from Head Office and I love that. I really enjoy being out and about on site, meeting staff and residents and blending that with working from Head Office with the wider HR team. This way, I get the best of both worlds.

Please let us know about a standout memory

Being at a site and finding out that a previous resident had left behind their upright piano that they no longer wanted. I had spoken to a Support Worker at another site who wanted to start a music club for their residents. I suggested that we could perhaps move the piano to the new site where I knew it would go to good use and then left it in the hands of the Service Managers. Next thing, I saw a video on LinkedIn of a resident playing the piano in it’s new home at Holland House. It made me very proud to be part of a team all working together to make the lives of our residents that little bit better.

Describe your role in 3 words

Challenging, varied and rewarding.

How did it feel to be nominated & win a NHC award?

Surprising! I never expected this, but can’t deny it felt good to know you’re a valued member of the team.

What would you say to someone thinking of joining the team?

Northern Healthcare is a great company to work for and I wouldn’t hesitate recommending it to anyone wanting to work in this industry. The care and passion to do the very best for our residents and staff is evident and I’ve loved every minute of working here.
