Bianca Aylwin recently joined the team as Service Manager at Adamson House. We caught up with her to find out her motivations for working in mental health, and her ambitions for Adamson House.

What attracted you to apply to join the Northern Healthcare team?

“I was impressed by the fact that Northern Healthcare provide Enhanced Supported Living, as there aren’t many providers out there that offer the clinical aspect. I’d also seen a lot of the positive outcomes that were being achieved in the services via social media. The main attraction for me though was the fact that I would be managing a brand-new service – a real opportunity for myself and my team to put a positive stamp on the service, right from the start.”

What made you want to work in mental health?

“I’ve always had a fascination with how the mind works and I have previously worked in mental health services. I like to be a part of making a difference to people’s lives and seeing individuals grow on their journey to recovery and greater independence.”

What are you most excited to see within the service?

“I am most excited to see the residents living meaningful and fulfilled lives and see smiles on everyone’s faces! I am looking forward to supporting residents to move on in their pathways to greater independence and supporting staff to become empowered to reach their chosen career paths.”

What activities are you looking forward to?

“My passions outside of work are cooking, music and gardening. I’d like the residents to be involved as much as possible in cooking and developing their skills in this area, so I’ll be encouraging meal preparation and baking the odd treat! Gardening is a really relaxing activity, and we have space to grow some fruit and vegetables here. It would be fantastic to see residents cook their own produce from the garden. Most people enjoy listening to music as a form of relaxation and creating music can also be great therapy. I know a lot of musicians and hope to be able to persuade some to come and volunteer at Adamson House – who knows, maybe we could create a band! We already have a keyboard in place…”

How have you engaged with the local community?

“I plan for the whole team to build an extensive library of the resources that are available for people to access in the community, including educational/training courses, volunteer placements, social events, places to visit, walking routes, support groups, leisure facilities, sports clubs etc. Essentially, anything out there that we can be involved with!”
