Team Player of the Year Award Winner | Ben Crocker, Support Worker

After celebrating his win at our NHC Awards 2023, we caught up with Ben Crocker.

What is your role at Northern Healthcare, and how did you get into it?

I am a Support Worker at Montgomery House and joined after the pandemic when a friend who already worked there recommended the job.

What attracted you to join Northern Healthcare?

I’d always had a desire to work in the Mental Health sector, and the Support Worker role was a great way to ease myself into a new career in an environment where I could still make a difference and gain valuable experience.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

The variety of backgrounds and personalities you meet – through relationships with colleagues and Service Users. The impact you can make through developing personal relationships with the Service Users is also very rewarding.

What is the most challenging aspect of your role?

The de-escalation of incidents with less familiar Service Users can be very challenging but equally rewarding when resolved. This is due to the need to think on your feet and apply any solution you might have to the relevant incident.

How do you and your team support each other?

The whole unit is staffed with a great variety of people with incredibly varied careers and backgrounds, which helps cater to the huge variety of Service Users. It also helps with staff being able to offer different perspectives on situations. The staff here can be very honest with each other, which is refreshing.

What makes Northern Healthcare stand out?

Northern Healthcare is a great starting point for a career in mental health, as well as offering opportunities to progress. Having had no prior experience in the Mental Health Sector I have learnt a huge amount of invaluable information over the past two and a half years. There’s always been a great sense of community and teamwork amongst the staff which benefits us all.

What would you say to someone thinking of joining Northern Healthcare?

I would recommend Northern Healthcare as a great starting point for a mental health career, and a fantastic and collaborative working environment in general.

Did you enjoy the NHC Awards ceremony?

The awards were a chance to catch up with familiar staff and meet some new faces. It left me feeling appreciated by my colleagues.

How did you celebrate your NHC awards win?

Had a great day with all my fellow nominees and winners and treated myself with my winnings, a voucher.
