At Northern Healthcare, we believe great leaders are developed, supported and empowered from within. That’s why we are proud to celebrate the successful completion of the second year of our Future Leaders Programme, a leadership development initiative designed to nurture talent, build confidence and prepare our colleagues for the next stage of their careers.
The Future Leaders Programme continues to play an important role in strengthening our organisation for the future. Rooted in our PROUD values and commitment to succession planning, the programme provides aspiring leaders with the knowledge, skills and experience needed to thrive in Service Manager roles and beyond.
As we celebrate this year’s graduates, we also recognise the dedication, curiosity and ambition they have demonstrated throughout their journey. Their achievements reflect not only personal growth but also Northern Healthcare’s ongoing investment in developing the leaders who will shape our future.
Developing Leaders for Tomorrow
Leadership, beyond managing people, requires confidence, self-awareness, sound judgement and the ability to inspire others through change and challenge. Over several months, delegates took part in a comprehensive programme of workshops, interactive learning sessions and practical development activities. Each module was delivered by experienced leaders and subject matter experts from across Northern Healthcare, offering valuable insight into the many functions that support our services and organisational success.
The programme explored key areas including:
- People and leadership
- Operational management
- Finance and commercial awareness
- Organisational strategy
- Personal and professional development
By bringing together colleagues from different services and departments, the programme also created opportunities to build relationships, share experiences and gain a broader understanding of how Northern Healthcare operates as one organisation.
Building Skills That Make a Difference
The Future Leaders Programme is designed to equip delegates with the practical skills and behaviours required to lead effectively in today’s healthcare environment.
Throughout the programme, participants developed core leadership competencies including:
- Strategic thinking
- Decision-making
- Effective communication
- Emotional intelligence
- Delegation
- Adaptability
- Accountability
- Team leadership and management
Through discussion and real-world application, delegates were encouraged to challenge themselves, broaden their perspectives and develop the confidence to step into greater responsibility. Importantly, the programme helps participants understand not only how to lead teams successfully, but also how their decisions contribute to wider organisational goals. This deeper appreciation of organisational dynamics enables future leaders to make informed decisions that support both colleagues and the people we support.
More Than Leadership Development
While the programme provides a strong foundation in leadership, its impact extends far beyond the classroom. Participants gain access to valuable networking opportunities with team members from across Northern Healthcare, helping them build connections and learn from different experiences and perspectives. Many delegates describe this as one of the most rewarding aspects of the programme, creating relationships that continue long after graduation.
The programme also supports career progression by helping colleagues identify their strengths, explore future opportunities and prepare for leadership roles with greater confidence. For many participants, the programme becomes a catalyst for both professional and personal growth. Alongside developing technical leadership skills, delegates often report increased self-confidence, stronger communication abilities and a greater understanding of their own leadership style.
Reflections from the 2025-2026 Graduates
The true success of the Future Leaders Programme is best reflected in the experiences of those who have completed it.
Philip Hind, Service Manager at Tenby House and Glen Garth House, reflected on the impact the programme has had on his development:
“The Future leader’s course has been very helpful in my ongoing growth as a service manager at Northern Healthcare. It helped me to develop my existing knowledge with up-to-date practice and has given me more confidence in my role going forward. Each of the modules were delivered by experts within the different areas and were informative, fun and interactive. I would recommend Future leaders to anyone wanting to develop their knowledge and progress to the next level in their career at Northern Healthcare.”
Lauren Anderton, Quality Improvement Facilitator at Central Office, highlighted the broader organisational insight she gained through the programme:
“Future leaders was an insightful course, expanding my wider understanding of Northern Healthcare and further developing my knowledge around internal processes.”
For Tanzeel Khan, Team Leader at Moss Lodge, the experience strengthened both confidence and practical leadership skills:
“The Future Leader course was a really positive experience for me. It helped me feel more confident in my role and gave me a better understanding of leadership in day to day work. I found it useful being able to take what I learned and think about how I can use it in practice.
I also benefited meeting staff from other services, which allowed me to share experiences, learn different approaches, and gain a broader understanding of how other services operate. Overall, it has helped me grow in my role and feel more prepared for future responsibilities.”
Saddam Malik, Service Manager at Merchants House, spoke about the value of connecting with colleagues from across the organisation:
“I attended the Future Leaders programme and really enjoyed the experience. It provided a valuable opportunity to meet and engage with senior management as well as colleagues from different services and backgrounds, which helped broaden my understanding of the wider organisation.
The session encouraged open discussion and allowed me to gain insight into people’s personal circumstances, experiences and perspectives. I found that everyone was very authentic and open, which created a supportive and inclusive environment.
It was particularly beneficial to hear about what motivates others in their roles and what they enjoy about their work. This helped me reflect on my own development and the direction I would like to take moving forward. Overall, I found the programme to be inspiring and supportive, and it has increased my confidence in engaging with others at different levels of the organisation. It also reinforced the importance of communication, collaboration and understanding different perspectives within a team.”
Jay Welsh, Deputy Service Manager at Merchants House, valued the opportunity to learn more about the wider business and connect with colleagues across departments:
“I really enjoyed this year’s Future Leaders course. The best thing for me was gaining the insight into how all the different departments work, their roles and responsibilities and how it all fits together to run as an organisation. I have worked for Northern Healthcare for five years where I have seen lots of great changes to the organisation and it feels as though we are only going upwards which is amazing.
I also really appreciated meeting new people within the organisation, getting to know them and discussing new ideas and best workplace practices. It is fair to say that there are a lot of talented individuals within the organisation and it was a great pleasure to meet with them on a monthly basis. I look forward to more training, learning and development opportunities within the organisation.”
Adam Dinsdale, Facilities Manager at Central Office, reflected on how the programme expanded his understanding of the organisation:
“The Future Leaders course was insightful. Working in my role, I don’t get to see all aspects of the business. It helped me expand my wider understanding of Northern Healthcare and develop my knowledge and skills to help the business continue to grow.”
Lisa Dean, Team Leader at Radcliffe Lodge, shared how the programme supported her development early in her leadership journey:
“The Future Leaders Programme gave me so much knowledge, especially as I haven’t been in my Team Leader role for very long. The people I met throughout the course had so much experience and insight to share, and it was a great group to be part of.
I learned so much, particularly about Northern Healthcare as an organisation and how to approach difficult conversations confidently. I would highly recommend this course as I feel it has made me stronger in my role as a Team Leader and helped me learn so much along the way. My manager has also been incredibly supportive throughout every step of my journey.”
